Absorption of Iron Depends Upon Vitamin C ?

Most of the people know that, iron absorption partially or directly related with intake of vitamin C or Ascorbic acid. In this article, I'm trying to give the accurate information about absorption of iron related with intake of vitamin C or not.

You need vitamin C to absorb iron depends upon which type of iron stuff you intake. There are two types of iron supplements. Ionic iron supplements found in different types of salts, polysaccharides and chelates. The other type, Heme Iron is found in Heme Iron Polypeptide (HIP). Heme Iron is expensive to manufacture.
Acidic GI (Gastro-intestinal)  environment is needed for Ionic Iron stuff to dissolve and absorb properly. And that's the purpose of adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C) with iron supplements to improve absorption. But Heme Iron Polypeptide (HIP) is absorbed in different way in comparison of absorption of Ionic iron. There's no need of vitamin C to absorb HIP.

Ferrous salts combined with ascorbic acid  increases oxidative stress in GI tract predisposing to ulceration, inflammation, increase of colic disorder and also cancer. So, better approach is that to gain better absorption by taking heme iron in form of HIP than taking ionic iron combined with vitamin C.

I think these information will help you a lot. Take care.
